THE VILLAGE

VILANOVA DE LOURENZÁ IS A TOWN AND MUNICIPALITY, BELONGING TO THE MARIÑA CENTRAL REGION, IN THE PROVINCE OF LUGO, SPAIN. LINKED SINCE ANCIENT TO THE ROAD TO SANTIAGO, THE LOCATION HAS GROWN IN THE WARMTH OF THE BENEDICTINE MONASTERY OF SAN SALVADOR, FOUNDED IN 969 AND IN THE GALICIAN BAROQUE STYLE.

THE LOURENZÁ VALLEY IS FAMOUS FOR ITS “FABAS” OR “FEIXÓNS” (BEANS), WHICH CAME FROM AMERICA THANKS TO THE MONKS OF THE MONASTERY AND AROUND WHICH AN ANNUAL FESTIVITY IS CELEBRATED: “LA FESTA DA FABA”

THE FACADE OF ITS CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA IS A PRECURSOR OF THAT OF THE OBRADOIRO OF THE CATHEDRAL OF SANTIAGO, SINCE IT WAS FINISHED BY CASAS NOVOA.

HIGHLIGHTS ARE THE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE VALDEFLORES CHAPEL, WHERE D. OSORIO GUTIERREZ, THE HOLY COUNT, IS BURIED, A PERSON FROM THE 10TH CENTURY AND FOUNDER OF THIS MONASTERY, WHERE HE ENTERED AFTER NUMEROUS BATTLES AND REMAINED A WIDOW. HIS FATHER HAD ALREADY HELPED KING DON PELAYO IN THE RECONQUEST OF SPAIN. IN HIS HONOR THE ANNUAL PARISH FESTIVALS ARE CELEBRATED.

THE CHURCH AND THE MONASTERY OF SAN SALVADOR

IT HAS BEEN DECLARED A HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC MONUMENT IN 1974. ITS FACADE IS A REFERENCE OF THE BEST GALICIAN BAROQUE. ITS ORIGINS GO BACK TO THE 10TH CENTURY, IN THE 12TH CENTURY IT BECAME A BENEDICTINE MONASTERY.

IN THE 16TH CENTURY IT WAS INTEGRATED INTO THE CONGREGATION OF SAN BENITO DE VALLADOLID. AND IN 1835 IT WAS AFFECTED BY THE CONFISCATION OF MENDIZÁBAL AND WAS DISMANTLED.

AFTER A FIRE AND YEARS OF ABANDONMENT, THE MONKS RETURNED TO OCCUPY IT IN 1910, AS THE PRIORY OF SAMOS, AFTER A NEW RESTORATION. SINCE 1942 IT BELONGS TO THE BISHOPISH OF MONDOÑEDO AGAIN AND DURING A FEW YEARS IT FUNCTIONED AS A MINOR DIOCESAN SEMINARY. IT IS CURRENTLY SERVING CITIZENS, WHERE DIFFERENT EVENTS ARE HELD IN ITS TWO SPECTACULAR CLOISTERES AND IN ITS ANNEXED GARDENS.

THE CHURCH OF SANTA MARÍA, WITH A CROSS FLOOR PLANT AND A SPECTACULAR FACADE, HAS ARTISTIC TREASURES SUCH AS THE EARLY CHRISTIAN TOMB, A FIFTH CENTURY SARCOPHAGUS, BROUGHT FROM AQUITAINE AND WHICH APPEARED FLOATING “BY MAGIC ART” IN THE SURROUNDINGS OF FOZ, LUGO. SARCOPHAGUS IN WHICH THE BONES OF THE «HOLY COUNT» RESPOSE, WHICH HAS A HOLE IN ITS LOWER PART, WHERE THE PEOPLE INSERT THEIR FINGERS THROUGH EVERY LAST WEEKEND OF THE MONTH OF AUGUST, WHEN THE LOCAL FESTIVALS ARE CELEBRATED IN HIS HONOR. THE HOLE, TO TOUCH YOUR BONES, WHICH WILL ALLOW THE REQUESTED FAVORS TO BE FULFILLED. IN FACT, THIS CHARACTER IS NOT CANONIZED BY THE CHURCH, BUT POPULAR TRADITION DOES CONSIDER IT GIVEN HIS NAME.

IN THE SURROUNDINGS OF THE CHURCH THERE IS A SPECTACULAR COLLECTION OF SACRED ART, WHICH PRESERVES PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES, GOLDENWORK, FURNITURE AND CLOTHING FROM THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES, IN ADDITION TO OTHER UNIQUE PIECES THAT DO DATE FROM THE 11TH AND 12TH CENTURY.

AMONG ALL OF THEM, I HIGHLIGHT CERTAIN PAINTINGS, ATTRIBUTED TO THE SURROUNDINGS OF THE PAINTER GOYA AND A SPECTACULAR BAROQUE ALTARPIECE WITH 28 RELICS, IN STONE AND POLYCHROMED WOOD, LOCATED IN THE SACRISTY OF THE CHURCH, WHERE YOU ACCESS THE SACRED MUSEUM AND A LIBRARY WITH FOUR THOUSAND VOLUMES WHICH INCLUDES BOOKS FROM THE 16TH CENTURY.

TAGE OF THE WAY LOURENZÁ – ABADÍN

THE NORTH ROAD BEGINS ITS JOURNEY IN GALICIA FROM THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF RIBADEO, A BORDER LOCATION BETWEEN THE PROVINCE OF LUGO AND ASTURIAS. ITS ACTIVITY HAS ALWAYS BEEN CLOSELY LINKED TO ITS ESTUARY SINCE IT ALSO IMPOSES THE ENTRANCE TO GALICIA FROM THE NORTHEASTERN AREA OF THE PENINSULA. THIS FIRST STAGE OF ALMOST THIRTY KILOMETERS IS AFFORDABLE FOR THE MOST PILGRIMS, HIGHLIGHTING ONLY THE LIFTS IN A PONTE ARANTE AND THE ONE THAT GIVES ACCESS TO LOURENZÁ WHERE YOU SHOULD ENJOY ITS EXCELLENT CULTURAL HERITAGE.

CANTÁBRICO SEA Y LAS CATEDRALES BEACH

LAS CATEDRALES BEACH IS A NATURAL MONUMENT LOCATED IN THE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL FORMATION CALLED “LA RASA CANTABRICA”, 15 KILOMETERS FROM CASA MOREDA.

THE CANTABRIAN FLAT IS A FLAT SURFACE SITUATED BETWEEN THE CANTABRIAN SEA AND THE MOUNTAINOUS SUPPORTS, GENERATING IN THIS WAY A TYPE OF LINEAR COASTAL WHICH IS STANDING OUT FOR THE FORMATION OF BEACHES AT THE FOOT OF THE CLIFFS AND SANDY SANDS SEPARATED BY CLIFFS.

THE ROCKS THAT MAKE IT UP ARE MAINLY SLATES AND QUARTZITE, WHICH HAD THEIR ORIGIN ABOUT 500 MILLION YEARS AGO IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. DURING ALL THIS TIME THEY HAVE SUFFERED GREAT TRANSFORMATIONS AND EROSIONS.

THE ROUGH WATERS OF THE CANTABRIAN SEA HAVE BEEN UNLOADING THEIR FURY AGAINST THESE ROCKS FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS, WHICH ARE ESPECIALLY WEAK BEFORE THE FORCE OF THE SEA.

THIS CONSTANT BEAT HAS CARVED SURPRISING FORMS INTO THE CLIFFS, CREATING LONG PASSAGES OF FINE SAND, DEEP CAVES WITH BEAUTIFUL COLORS, GREAT ARCHES OVER 30 METERS HIGH, CLIFFS…
